PORTLAND MILLS CEMETERY NEWSLETER
The
annual meeting of stockholders of Portland Mills Cemetery was held on June 6,
2011. President, Carolyn Smith Collins, called the meeting to order.
Cy
Harbison, Secretary, read the minutes from the last meeting, June 7, 2010. The
minutes were approved as read.
Don
Roberts, Treasurer, was unable to attend the meeting so Carolyn read the
treasurer’s report.
Expenses $4,793.24

$66,000.00
Total

The
treasurer’s report was approved as read.
New
Business
There
was a discussion on the expenses of the post cards that are sent for the
meeting notice and the newsletter. A motion was made and passed that the money
for those two expenses would be paid for by the cemetery account.
Harold
Thomas, our grounds caretaker, said it was time to buy a new mower. He had the
information on a new mower, which is $4500 after discounts that are given to
the cemetery. It will have a 4-year warranty. Harold will buy the mower that
the new one will replace. He will pay $2250 for it. Therefore, our cost for the
new mower will be $2250. A motion was made and approved to buy the new mower.
Harold will take care of the purchase.
The Elizabeth
Mosteller Estate gave the cemetery $5000. It was approved to take $200 of that
money and place a marker at a tree in the cemetery in Memory of Lester (Jack)
and Elizabeth Mosteller.
Stephanie,
who takes care of the flowers and scrubs at the cemetery, said she needed
mulch. There was a motion made and approved that once a year she could order
the mulch for the flowerbeds at the cemetery. Cy and Dan help with that project
by using their truck and tractor. It is really appreciated.

a report on the burials that have been at the Portland Mills Cemetery in the
past year.

Elections
were held. Carolyn Smith Collins was re-elected President and Cy Harbison was
re-elected Secretary for a 2-year term.

to the cemetery are always welcome. They are tax deductable. Send them to Don

The
Portland Mills Cemetery has a website that is managed by David Marrero. It is
very informative and you can access the site by going to portlandmills.com.
If you find any information that is not correct, please contact David. The
Veterans list is now completed and if there is any name listed that we do not
have the information as to where and when that Veteran served, please contact
David. He does a great job of caring for the website and we thank him for that.
There
are so many compliments given on the Portland Mills Cemetery. We thank the
grounds keepers and the officers who keep a watchful eye on the cemetery. It is
truly a beautiful place and it takes work to keep it that way.
The next
meeting will be held at Portland Mills Christian Church on June 4, 2012, at 2
p.m. Please plan to attend.
